DISCUSSION QUESTION #4


1.       Prove the statement below. Write passages from the book that support your answer, write page number, and analyze.
STATEMENT: Humans can determine their future despite their present surroundings.

  1. In chapter 2, it talks about Nelson Mandela saw around him what was going to be determined in his future. Mandela started life of royalty then spent 27 years in jail. South Africa, where he lived was an important place in history. White men had ruled apartheid. People in Mandela's society trained Nelson how to grow up and live in the town.

I agree with this statement because Nelson Mandela was supposed to marry someone and then ran away and changed his future.(p.30) Another reason is when Nelson was in prison and he was passing political notes round the prison which led to him becoming the President of South Africa.(p.49)The last reason is that Nelson was a peaceful man who wanted equality without fighting which made him become a worthy person to run for President.

  3. I agree with the statement because, despite Mandela being in prison for 27 years, he was able to become president and lead South Africa. His prison surroundings certainly weren't looking good for his future but he turned it around, which shows humans determine their future with there actions not surroundings. Chapter 4 is all about his prison expeirence.
